Student Union Services

Save Cash, Get Your EXTRA Card!

All students at City College Norwich will receive a blue student ID card, this card acts as proof of your membership to the Union and also entitles you to vote in the Union elections. As part of being a member of the Students’ Union at College you also become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS). NUS have gone the extra mile this year to make sure students are able to get the most out of life.

Student Groups & Societies

As a member of the Students’ Union you have access to a variety of student groups, societies and associations. Whether you want to meet new people, continue a hobby/skill or learn something new or just get involved with student life, there is a group for you. However; if there isn’t a group to suit your interest, we will be pleased to help you create it. Union members are welcome to join any student groups or sports clubs which represent an interest or passion. As there are so many benefits of joining a student group you will be missing out if you don’t!

Freshers Week

Look out for Freshers Week which is at the start of the new college term. Freshers Week is designed to make the start of your academic year as easy but as fun as possible! The week is great fun with parties and our Freshers Fair; so why don’t you get involved?

The Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is voted in by you, every year in the Spring. The committee is made up of sixteen officers: two full-time officers (sabbatical officers) – who take a year out of their studies to work full-time for the Union, and then there are fourteen part-time officers, who fulfil their roles alongside their studies for a year.

Each officer has a different remit and it is their role to take the Union forward in their specific area to improve the student experience.

Student Governors

City College Norwich is an avid supporter of the student voice. The College is recognised by OFSTED for its good practice in involving students at every level of decision making at the College. The College also financially supports the Union each year by providing the salaries of the sabbatical officers, staff of the Union and also a significant amount of money to enable us to sort out any issues and ensure that your time at the College is packed full of fun.

Student Parliament

Student Parliament is the democratic voice for students at City College Norwich. Through motions to Parliament, students can change the Union, the College and also the wider college society. When Parliament meets and speaks it is the voice of around 16,000 students of the College, it is the students democratic voice at the College.

Class Representatives

Class Representatives are students that represent the views and concerns of their class peers and also ensure that the quality of the education you receive is exactly what you would expect.

Why not become one of those who represent others?

Every spring, nominations open for the elections to the Students’ Union Executive. Any student at the College can be nominated for one of the 12 positions available. The candidates will then all campaign fiercely for your vote, based on the issues that they believe to be the most important to you. Even at the start of your life here at the College, you will have the chance to vote for who on your course you would like to represent you as your Class Representative.

Your Voice

Why do you need representation?

Get Involved

The Students’ Union is made up of every single student at City College Norwich and is here to support you during your studies. It is therefore essential that it is the members that drive the direction that the Union takes and the issues and activities that it moves forward. Members have an opportunity to get involved at all levels of the work of the Union.

Feedback

The Students’ Union is here for you, the members, and it is therefore important that you have your say about the Union. If you have got something to say about the Union then make sure your voice gets heard. You are doing this every time that you vote in an election or passing your opinions on to an elected officer but there are also other ways to get your views across.

How Does the Union work?

The most important thing to remember about the Union and the College is that any student can bring about change. The structure of the Union both itself and how it fits within the structure of the College has evolved into a hierarchy, which places students at the very forefront of decision making. Any student can submit a motion to Student Parliament regardless of whether they are an elected Class Representative, Officer, Governor or Sabbatical.

What Does Being a Member of the Union Mean For You?

From the moment you enrol on to your course at City College Norwich you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union.

Every student will have different experiences, could have come from a different background, be of a different race, gender and age. This results in the student community at the College being culturally very rich. When you think about it, there is really no other circumstance in which you can live and work alongside such diverse people, yet have something in common with every single one of them – you are a student at City College Norwich.
